Shree Siddhivinayak Anjur

The Symbol of Hope

About Us

Anjur is where the Naiks conceived and started their mission to free Vasai (then Bacaim later Bassein) of Portuguese rule in the eighteenth century.

Shree Siddhivinayak Anjur was enshrined in 1718 by Gangaji Naik, the eldest of the five Naiks who took part in the Maratha campaign of 1737-39 to drive the Portuguese out of Indian soil. Lord Siddhivinayak at Anjur thus has an historical significance. The shrine is ensconced in a 300 year old 'madi' (a miniature fortress) of the Naik family. The right trunk idol is a small, beautiful piece of sculpture smeared with sacred vermillion, and is housed in a brass and rosewood altar.

The idol was presented to Gangaji Naik as a “divine blessing” by the descendants of the famous saint Morya Gosavi of Chinchwad, Pune. [Morya Gosavi was a prominent saint of the Hindu Ganapatya sect, which considers the elephant-faced god Ganesha as the Supreme Being.]

And the story goes that it is this resolute faith and devotion to Lord Siddhivinayak that motivated and inspired Gangaji Naik to plan and execute the great military campaign against the Portuguese occupation of Vasai.

Shree Siddhivinayak Anjur today stands as a symbol of the resolute focus, the indomitable spirit, and the lion-hearted bravery shown by many great Indians like Gangaji Naik.

Here are some glimpses of the Lord.
